My experience at UF so far has been that practically nobody wants to talk to you unless you really force a conversation with them. Well, not in Mechanics I!
Everyone around me introduced themselves to me, and today said hello and knew my name. I said, "This is the friendliest class I've ever been in!" The girl behind me responded, "Gotta love physics; everyone's actually excited to learn!"
I love physics. |

Summer is on its way out, which is unfortunate. I don't feel like I wasted it, but I do feel like it went by very quickly. I also feel like it wasn't that distinguishable from the rest of my life, which is a very strange feeling for me. I suppose summer always represented freedom for me, and this year it only represented freedom from school since I already seem to have every other freedom now that I live away from home.
I got fired from Steak 'n Shake. First time I've ever been fired from anywhere. My general manager decided to go on a bit of a firing spree, and since I didn't completely exceed on my "server evaluation," I was one of the people to get canned. Then, I asked for another opportunity, and she agreed as long as I went back through training. I come in to get my training schedule, and she tells me that she changed her mind. It was a good job, but she was a very crazy lady in general, so I'm kind of glad to be gone. Dunno what I'm gonna do about cash.
Monday is the first day of school. This semester is probably going to be tough, but I should be able to handle it. I'm slightly excited to get back into the "studying and drinking coffee all the time" swing of things, but I do enjoy the simple things in life that summer brings, and I don't always enjoy school.
I've been questioning what I want to do after college (and, for that matter, when I want to quit going to college), and I think that being a high school physics teacher might give me joy. I'm not sure that research is where I want to still be headed, but I'm not giving up on it yet either. I've just realized that having a wife and a kid and a house and the ability to relax and just have a "good job" that I go to every day and come home from every night is appealing to me. Maybe I'm wrong.
In other news, I feel really, really, really old. I'm 19! I wish I was young again. |

| Class Grades, Summer A 2009 |
[Jun. 27th, 2009|12:16 am] |
Linear Algebra: B
I got a 62% on the very first exam because I didn't pay enough attention to the time limit, which made it mathematically impossible for me to get an A from then on out. Sucks. |

It's 5 AM. I've been studying since 8 pm essentially nonstop with spaghetti and coffee for fuel, and I still don't understand half the stuff that will be on my final exam, which starts in four hours. If I sleep, I'll never understand. If I don't sleep, I'll crash during the exam. I hate myself for putting myself in this position. I just want this to be over. This is literally the worst. |

On my Calculus III final, there was a one-point extra credit question at the very end which read, "Write something that will make me laugh."
I wrote, "Women's Rights."
What a jokester. I hope he doesn't fail me for that. |

| UF Summer A and Fall 2009 Schedule |
[Apr. 20th, 2009|11:40 am] |
So, at the moment, here's what my schedule looks like at the University of Florida:
Summer A: MAS 3114 - Linear Algebra (MTWHF)
Fall: HSC 3102 - Personal and Family Health (MWF) MAP 2302 - Elementary Differential Equations (MWF) PHY 3221 - Mechanics I (MWF) PHY 3513 - Thermal Physics (MWF)
The physics building at UF is INSANE! The lobby has all sorts of random neat stuff in it, but the coolest part is that down every single hallway, there is a huge chalkboard with chalk and erasers after every single door. You can literally stop at any point while walking and write on the walls. There are equations and problems and drawings of triangles EVERYWHERE. Also, there are "Caution: Radioactive Material" signs on many doors.
I'm excited. |

My first LJ post was, ironically, about how I would never use Livejournal because it was just a dumb fad. Now, 5 years later, I'm answering polls on this dumb fad site ;-) |

| | Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks | ] | Life is good. I got into UF as a physics major; I start this summer. I'm feeling good about what I'm doing. I'm building a savings account, building a relationship with the best girl I've ever met, and learning neat stuff in school.
Life is also weird. I feel like I should still be in high school. I'm mature and responsible, but I'm immature. I wanna go to homecoming and prom again, and I wanna sit outside the cafeteria and eat lunch at a designated time, and get yelled at for using my cell phone. I've mentioned this before, but college is just nowhere near as community-oriented as high school. I don't feel like I belong. I'm just "that kid in your Calc III class." In high school, I was Steven Keys, and when my phone would ring in class, everyone in the room would cough loudly to cover it up.
I have a cool friend named Jon Gatson. Ironically, I didn't meet him at school. He plays Magic and listens to good music. I'm glad to have someone in Gainesville I can just chill with who isn't integrally involved in my life like Lauren.
Steak 'n Shake is a good job. I'm diggin' the money, and the work is pretty enjoyable, to be honest.
I'm a happy guy, but I'm really just not ready to be an adult. Like, at all. Like, give me another ten years of being age 16-18, thanks. Do I talk about this too much? I definitely think about it too much. |

| Cool Weekend |
[Mar. 17th, 2009|09:52 pm] |
So this past weekend was pretty fun for me. I didn't work at all, I did better than I thought I might do in a Magic PTQ (although I still didn't really do that great), and I saw the space shuttle launch from close range (~10 kilometers)!
The PTQ in Tallahassee was a lot of fun. I hung out with friends, played my favorite game, and didn't come in last! The most fun thing about it was that throughout the entire set of 7 rounds, there was a chance that I would place in the top 8 (except, obviously, after my last match finished). That possibility made it really exciting, because the top 8 is single elimination, and first place gets a plane tocket to Pro Tour: Honolulu. Anyway, I finished 4-3 in 22nd place out of 99 players. I won 3 packs, which is crappy, but it's still not nothing. Considering I had played about 8 games (non-sanctioned, too!) of extended format Magic before that in my entire life, I'd say I did well. Two of the decks that I lost to pretty much just auto-win or auto-lose based on probability rather than skill (Storm and All-in Red), and the third deck I lost to was BG Loam. Also, I got an automatic game loss (for accidentally drawing an extra card) against someone else playing BG Loam and still won the match! What a master!
The shuttle launch was fun in that it was a very cool event to see, but was not fun in that we were still very far away, and the traffic was so bad that it took 7 hours to get home(!) Here's my best photo of the night:

Lauren and I went to New York City for spring break, compliments of Carleth (my stepmom). It was a good time. If I'm not lazy, I'll post pictures here or on Facebook or both.
I got accepted into UF as a physics major. I start early this summer. Woohoo.
In other news, there is pollen on EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE. My eyes are so itchy. The weather is great, but it's like it's not worth going outside because of allergies.
Heading to Tallahassee tomorrow morning for a Magic extended-format PTQ. I'm not really sure if I'll do well at all. My deck is pretty good, but I don't have much extended experience at all. Wish me luck!
Sunday, I am going to see the space shuttle launch! My dad has some very nice tickets which should allow us to get very close. Sounds cool!
Then, back to school and work :-(
Happy Spring Break 2009! Live it up! |

| Life Updates |
[Feb. 6th, 2009|02:15 pm] |
I guess I haven't really made any mention of this stuff, but it seems like fairly big news as far as my life goes:
I'm living with Lauren, Brittany Dean, Brittany's brother, and his girlfriend in a townhouse in Gainesville as of the start of this semester. Lauren and I are sharing a room; we have the entire downstairs of the house to ourselves, kinda. Things are going nicely. Rent is cheap. Don't know if it'll be permanent or not, though.
I'm a server at Steak 'n' Shake as of two weeks ago-ish. It pays extremely well ($12-13 per hour, on average, after tips and before taxes). It's an ironic job for a vegan, since I don't eat steaks or shakes, but it's a fun job, and I like the people I work with.
I kinda miss home. |

| Final Grades for Fall 2008 |
[Dec. 18th, 2008|11:25 pm] |
Calculus II: B+ Chemistry II & Lab: B Composition II: A Intro to Ethics: A Intro to Music: A
I'm happy I guess. If my chemistry teacher wasn't so crappy (didn't teach anything and curved every test by 10-15%), I could have gotten a better grade in chemistry without spending so much time studying for it, spent more time studying for calc, and gotten an A in calc easily.
Oh well. |

| School! |
[Nov. 18th, 2008|08:15 pm] |
I don't think I ever posted my course schedule from this semester, and I just signed up for classes for next semester. I thought I'd share both:
Fall 2008: -Intro To Ethics -Calculus II + Lab -Chemistry II + Lab -Composition II -Intro To Music (17 credits; at school M, T, W, and F)
Spring 2009: -Physics II + Lab -Informal Logic -Calculus III + Lab -Energy and Ecology (14 credits; at school M, W, F)
PS - All those elective-sounding classes fulfill stupid requirements for my AA. I'm getting my AA with like 90 credits or something retarded like that because I had to take all of these randomly-required electives. On a happier note, I'm pretty excited about only going to school three days a week next semester. I'm also excited to have six clock hours of physics per week. |
